Happy USS Florida Day http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2008/07/28/happy-uss-florida-day/ http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2008/07/28/happy-uss-florida-day/#comments Mon, 28 Jul 2008 22:52:28 +0000 crankygeek http://blog.crankygeek.com/?p=119 Not officially, of course. But the hull number of my submarine, the USS Florida, was SSBN 728, and because of the way my brain is wired, whenever I see the date, 7/28, it makes me think of that.

A few years ago, the Florida was converted to an SSGN which means they removed the Trident missile capability and configured it with conventional missiles and support for special ops. Except for that whole “King’s Bay, GA,” thing, I’m pretty jealous.

I’m…caught up? http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2008/06/30/imcaught-up/ http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2008/06/30/imcaught-up/#comments Mon, 30 Jun 2008 16:10:53 +0000 crankygeek http://blog.crankygeek.com/?p=115 It’s summertime and, at a school district, that means the work day is a little bit easier for IT folks.

It also means that I’ve got time to check my feeds. Which means I’ve just read everything and now I don’t know what to do for the next six hours in my day.

Okay, I’m kidding, I still have plenty to do (Don’t worry about me, taxpayers!), but it’s such an odd feeling having no unread items. Maybe I should look for new feeds? After all, I do need fodder for my new link feed (I did mention my link feed, didn’t I?)

I’ve added a link blog, and other housecleaning http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2008/06/27/ive-added-a-link-blog-and-other-housecleaning/ http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2008/06/27/ive-added-a-link-blog-and-other-housecleaning/#comments Sat, 28 Jun 2008 06:21:22 +0000 crankygeek http://blog.crankygeek.com/?p=114 I was talking with Emmett today and I mentioned (very much in passing) that I’d been considering adding a link blog. He called me on it, so I’ve spent the last couple of hours upgrading WP (been running 1.5 for awhile – yikes) and adding a link feed (link – also linked in the sidebar).

I’ve also added a link (finally) to Emmett’s blog and he has the starring role as my first linkee. (Thanks for the friendly elbow in the ribs, Emmett!)

Hopefully, that feed will update a little more often than the main one. There won’t be a particular theme. It will vary from geek to political to wtf – basically the same kind of stuff I post, only written by someone else.

Happy Birthday Nick http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2007/05/11/happy-birthday-nick/ http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2007/05/11/happy-birthday-nick/#comments Fri, 11 May 2007 19:37:24 +0000 crankygeek http://blog.crankygeek.com/?p=102 Normally, I make fun of people when they reach 40, but now that I personally see it rapidly approaching over the horizon (just a scant 2.5 years away) I’ll keep the smart-alecky comments to myself and simply wish Nick Bradbury a happy birthday.

Five Things http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2006/12/23/five-things/ http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2006/12/23/five-things/#comments Sun, 24 Dec 2006 03:37:41 +0000 crankygeek http://blog.crankygeek.com/?p=99 Ack – I’ve been memed. Twice!

Here’s five things most people don’t know about me:

  1. I had surgery for an intussusception when I was only few months old. Because I was a baby, they had to remove my appendix just to perform the procedure.
  2. I failed miserably as an economics major. As interesting as I found economic theory to be, I just could not get the math. That derailed my college efforts and it took me several years to get back on the horse. My BS (in CS) would eventually arrive 10 years after I started college.
  3. I’ve been trying to learn to play bass for a few years, now. Apparently, you have to pick it up more often than every few months to get anywhere. I have my mom’s Les Paul copy guitar that I’ve also tried learning how to play. I think I’ll stay focused on the bass and let Connor play lead guitar.
  4. The guilty pleasure in my music collection is an 80’s best-of series called “Living In Obvlivion: The 80’s Greatest Hits.” While there are a few songs on the set that I don’t like, I can listen to the majority of them on any occasion and the entire collection is usually on my iPod.
  5. I’ve held a publicly elected office as the Republican party Precinct Committee Officer. (It was a landslide victory; I was unopposed.) I held the position when George W. Bush was first elected (don’t blame me, I voted for a different candidate). Needless to say, I’m no longer a Republican.

Tag, you’re it: Mark, Difranco, Emmet, Gordon (Correct link, now…), Tom.

A quiet hero passes: Admiral James Stockdale http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2005/07/07/a-quiet-hero-passes/ http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2005/07/07/a-quiet-hero-passes/#comments Thu, 07 Jul 2005 23:54:48 +0000 crankygeek http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2005/07/07/a-quiet-hero-passes-admiral-james-bond-stockdale/ I just found out that on July 5th, Admiral James Stockdale passed away.

I’m a US Navy Veteran and I’m ashamed to say that I never realized that the one-time Reform Party Vice-Presidential candidate was a true hero. Sure, I heard references to his service during the election of 1992, but it never clicked.

He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions as the highest ranking Naval officer to be held as a POW in Vietnam. His leadership and determination in the face of such adversity should be an inspiration to all of us.

Please take some time to learn more about this quiet hero.
