Why? Because Joss asked nicely.

There’s Something about Curling http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2006/11/27/theres-something-about-curling/ http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2006/11/27/theres-something-about-curling/#comments Mon, 27 Nov 2006 22:31:27 +0000 crankygeek http://blog.crankygeek.com/?p=91 I don’t know what it is, but my wife and I share this fascination with curling.

One of the benefits of moving back to Olympia is that Comcast carries CBC television which means we’re sure to stumble upon a game of curling every few weekends.

Another thing that makes our interest in curling so odd is that we don’t even know the rules! Of course you can pick up some of it just by watching, but as I was reminded this weekend, even though we speak the same language, when the Canadian commentator is talking about the game, I only understand about half of it. After telling myself for years that “I really should jump online and find out more about this game,” I finally did.

The linked Wikipedia article is a good start, and I also found a Flash intro to Curling on the official Canadian Curling Association website. As popular as the sport is in Canada (according to their Curling Facts page – 872,000 people play curling in Canada), I have to assume the intro is aimed squarely at Americans. Those Canadians are so darn polite.

Real-life Simpson intro http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2006/03/04/real-life-simpson-intro/ http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2006/03/04/real-life-simpson-intro/#comments Sat, 04 Mar 2006 17:18:07 +0000 crankygeek http://blog.crankygeek.com/?p=63 In the interest of participating in this “viral video” thing that I keep hearing about, here’s a real-life The Simpsons intro I just found out about.

Really well done and easily worth 30 seconds of your time.

You can’t take the sky from me http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2006/01/11/you-cant-take-the-sky-from-me/ http://blog.crankygeek.com/archives/2006/01/11/you-cant-take-the-sky-from-me/#comments Wed, 11 Jan 2006 23:07:16 +0000 crankygeek http://blog.crankygeek.com/?p=60 I’m mid-way through the Firefly DVDs and I’m loving it. I regret (among other things) never cluing into it when it was on t.v. I also bought Serenity, but I’m waiting until I get through all the episodes before I watch it. I haven’t even peeled off the shrink wrap.

This post’s title is a line from the show’s theme song:

Take my love, take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I don’t care, I’m still free
You can’t take the sky from me

Take me out to the black
Tell them I ain’t comin’ back
Burn the land and boil the sea
You can’t take the sky from me

There’s no place I can be
Since I found Serenity
But you can’t take the sky from me…

- hat tip to the FireflyWiki

That’s a libertarian song if I’ve ever heard one. I usually have that line running through my head for quite awhile after each episode.

Did I mention that I highly recommend the series?
